UNKNOWN GENIUS explores what happens when imagery separated by generations and cultural worlds is brought into the same visual language.
Vincent van Gogh represents the mythology of the artist: obsession, isolation, expression and the complicated relationship between recognition and genius.
Wu-Tang represents another kind of cultural force. Born from New York hip-hop, its iconography travelled far beyond music and became part of a global visual language.
Rather than reproducing either world, Christopher Marie reinterprets these references through his own mark-making, typography and painting.
The garment becomes the canvas.
Painted predominantly in black, white and grey, the composition is interrupted by a single field of yellow. Hand-rendered lettering extends across both sleeves, turning the entire garment into one continuous artwork.
This is not a printed graphic.
Each mark, variation and imperfection belongs to the making of the piece.
